Eleven

Eleven

Eleven o'clock

No, make that eleven-oh-one

The fan's hum lulls me into an exhausted daze

The cat sleeps near the plant by the wall

Her long body stretched around it's pot.

She wakes momentarily;

Her paw needs cleaning

Then her head falls down again

And she drifts back to sleep

I yawn and wish I was like her

Sleeping dreamlessly on the floor

I live only for the future

She lives only for the present

She does things because she wants to

I do things because I have to

Another yawn comes out of my mouth

The cat lifts her head to see the commotion

I smile at her and close my eyes

Together and separately

We sink into unconsciousness

She into her dreamless rest

And I into my restless dreams
