The Girl and the Night

The Girl and the Night

In the cold still house

The ticking clock announces his arrival.

Once again, Night has returned to court me.

At first too shy to let him in

I keep the lights on

Locking him outside.

Patiently, he waits for me

Until I relent and allow him inside.

Night encloses me in his chilly embrace

And I shiver against his caresses.

Gently, he relaxes me to sleep

Kissing my eyelids shut,

Holding my head in his hands.

In the silence I drift away

Wrapped tightly in my lover's arms.
